Young environmentalist and climate advocate Karen Kimani has been honored with the prestigious "Bravery of Becoming" Award by HEROES GLOBAL VEMA during the Hero of Africa Awards 2026.

The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional courage, dedication and commitment in creating positive change within African communities. Karen was celebrated for her selfless and sacrificial contribution to the betterment of society in Kenya through environmental conservation, youth empowerment and climate advocacy.

At only 13 years old, Karen has become one of Africa's most recognizable young environmental leaders. Through the Karen Forte Environmental Conservation Foundation, she has mobilized thousands of young people to participate in tree-growing initiatives, environmental education programs and climate action campaigns. Her work has extended beyond Kenya, earning international recognition from global organizations, governments and climate leaders.

Presenting the award, HEROES GLOBAL VEMA commended Karen's unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and her determination to ensure that children's voices are represented in climate conversations. The organization noted that her efforts continue to inspire a new generation of young Africans to become active participants in shaping a sustainable future.

Receiving the award, Karen expressed gratitude to her family, teachers, environmental club members and supporters who have walked alongside her on her conservation journey.

"This award is not just for me; it belongs to every child who believes they can make a difference. Together, we can create a greener, healthier and more sustainable Africa," she said.

The recognition adds to Karen's growing list of achievements, which includes participation in global climate summits, international environmental forums and the establishment of innovative programs such as the Virtual Forest Initiative and the 50-acre Model Forest Project in Kinale, Kiambu County.

The Bravery of Becoming Award serves as a testament to Karen's remarkable impact and reinforces her vision of empowering children and communities to take meaningful action against climate change.

As she continues her mission to plant one million trees, mentor young environmental champions and build climate resilience across Kenya, Karen remains a powerful example of how passion, courage and purpose can transform lives and communities.
